I work overnight stocking shelves at Walmart. Last night we lost power at 11:30pm, and spent the next 6 hours putting our freight away and pulling spoiled food from the coolers. After about two hours, the emergency lights started to go out one by one and by 3-4am we were working primarily on flashlights, only about three lights were still on in the store (as opposed to the hundreds we started out with.) Is this legal?
Open Question: Does PayBySMS costs go into the cap/plan credit or is it additional cost?
Elaboration: So if I make a payment via PayBySMS, and I'm on a phone plan/cap ($30 cap - 3 Network - $150 credit) Does the cost go into my credit (as in $150 credit left, $140 after payment with the usual $30 bill) or as $150 before, $150 left after payment, and a $40 bill? I am on a 24 month-lock in, so I -think- that's a contract. In case you're wondering this is for Rune Scape, A fast answer would be very well appreciated. Thank you !

Open Question: Tendering for a house?
I have seen a lovely little house that is up for tender but I'm not sure what this means. I know I will have to put a bid in a sealed envelope and send it to the estate agent but is there anything else I should be aware of? Anyone got any tips? I remember seeing this ad a few times in the QWeekend magazine. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the financial crisis and children but I can't quite remember what exactly. It has a picture of a girl in a checked school uniform and she's sitting down on a bench against a wall. Thanks in advance! :)

Hi, Just checking that my landlord is fulfilling his duties - no worries for me and my partner but when we move shortly we would like to inform him if there are any issues - i'd hate for a child to live here and electrocute themselves! 1. There are no switches on any of the plug sockets 2. No extractor fans in kitchen or bathroom Its probably nothing but I just wanted to check :) Thanks! Thankyou, it is indeed a brand new kitchen but as long as the issues won't negatively affect the new tenants its all good :)

Hi, I have few doubts regarding IT proofs submission under Section 80c Let's say I was working in a company A from April 2009 to December 2009. As part of IT declaration I have declared Fixed Deposit under Section 80C. Before submitting the proofs, I left(resigned) company A on December 31st 2009. I joined company B in the Month of February 2010. My questions are: 1. To which company should I submit 80c proof? 2. Before what date should i submit 80c FD proof? 3. If I fail to submit the declared 80c proof what are the consequences? 4. Will I get normal salary from company B for the month of February and March 2010? Thanks a lot Regards, Bob

Open Question: Private Equity Fund Valuation (Net Asset Value) - how done?
I know the basics - equity company and investors go in together in a fund. That fund is used to invest in companies, and the private equity firm will have many separate funds going at the same time. I believe that each fund can be used to invest in 1 or more companies. I also know that each day the performance of a fund is calculated using the Net Asset Value (NAV) which is basically the surplus left for investors after deducting all liabilities from assets. Now - how is NAV calculated? Do the fund accountants have access to the records of the company(s) and calculate a basic balance sheet/financial statements everyday? Or are references made to fair value? Thanks for your help James (This is based on UK principles - I don't know if US is different)

Open Question: Should I give notice?
I am working as a freelancer on a UK contract (via an agency) in France. The manager of the department (ie the Client) met with me yesterday to tell me that they were ending my contract early because they had found a permanent person to take over. Since this meeting I have found out that maybe he is not telling the whole truth as the company would normally give me notice. What I found out is that he has been on the phone to stop my access to the company systems and is revoking my access to the building, so effectively I will be walked out of the building. What I am worried about is getting paid my notice as under the contract it states that I don't get paid notice if I have acted "unprofessionally" I think he is going to make up excuses saying that I have been unprofessional so as not to pay my notice. I have a meeting with him and my agency this afternoon and am told that it is up to my agency if I get paid my notice or not. Should I hand in my notice before this meeting so that maybe I will get paid my notice?
Open Question: Why you should'nt use Paypal?
Paypal is the worst service I have ever used. My problems were: - Paypal created 2 independant accounts, one for selling and one for buying without me knowing, so I was sat there wondering where my ebay payment was when it was sitting in another paypal account that was linked to my debit card for some reason - There service is generally terrible, it takes them 3-4 days before they do anything. - I tried to link my bank account, I gave them my first bank details and they'd said they'd send 2 single payments to my bank account, waited 2-3 days as stated, NO payment. -I then tried to link the same bank account, after 3-4 days of total impatince I linked it, and wait THEY ACTUALLY PAID ME! - I then verified my bank account , only to find that apparently the payments I enetered where wrong!, they then blocked my bank account and virtually have £30 in shitty paypal account that I cannot do fuck all with. -Also I DO NOT think 2% on what comes into your paypal account is a justified payment to them tbh, for what?, just handeling my money?, and they deserve to paid for that?, and 2% payments especially IS NOT justified when it takes them and their useless emplyees 3-4 days to do ANYTHING. I have 10p in my bank account from them, and I do not know if it was from the first or second payment because their so fucking slow........... My advice, fuck all paypal DO NOT bother. Pay indpendantly when buying or selling on ebay etc
Open Question: Help! HSA funds are in limbo and I want to file my 2009 taxes and get my refund!?
My employer filed bankruptcy last year and the company was sold. I was hired by the new company, but my husband and I decided to get on his (HD) plan and not pick up insurance with my employer. Since I didn't take the new employer insurance (expensive!) I was told that I would be charged monthly administrative fees to continue the HSA. A few months later (still in 2009) my husband's employer offered an HSA and that they would be contributing $300 a year to it, so we decided to roll my HSA funds into his new account (we were assured we could do this). We filed the paperwork about 3 months ago and heard nothing more. My husband attempted to get answers from his employer and was told to just be patient. I called the bank that's handling his HSA setup and sure enough, my paperwork hadn't gone through. We were told this was probably because there were so many employees with his company that were filing paperwork at the time, and when my paperwork was received it was ignored because I wasn't the employee trying to roll the funds (my husband was). What I want to know is, do I have to wait til this whole mess is straightened out until I can file my 2009 taxes due to the fact that eventually there should be a distribution (from my HSA going into his)? Or does it not matter unless we exceed the family HSA $ limit for 2010 contributions? There's over $3000 that will be rolled and I don't want to have to pay taxes on it.
Open Question: non profit food bank worker: foot in the door, or resume killer?
I graduated with a bachelors in sociology and I was in the peace corps. Since my experience in the peace corps I've been hooked on work that actually matters and makes a positive impact on the community, so for months I've been sending my resume out to non profit organizations with very few (almost no) responses. It seems the non profit world can be very hard to crack into. I finally applied to run a food bank and I got the interview and it went really well. The only problem is, they're not really looking for anyone with a college degree so the pay is pretty low (26,000) though the benefits are really good, but besides that, the staff seemed awesome, the office was really nice and I got really good vibes from the place, I think I would really enjoy working there. So the low pay would totally be worth it IF it would get me that "foot in the door" in the non-profit world that I've been searching for. Will future employers see it that way? If I wanted to work again with a jobless, homeless, mentally-ill population in some other aspect, will they see this as good experience in that field and maybe I could use my degree in a later job? Or will future employers see this as just another unskilled labor job, and therefore it would hurt my resume, and chances of doing something more substantial in the future? I have no kids, no spouse and no pets, so, its just me to support, and I'm totally willing to eat balogna sandwiches for a couple of years in order to work my way into the non profit job market!!

Open Question: Allowances and W4 - Tax Withholding Question?
I wanted to switch and pay my federal tax on an annual basis. Up to now, I always claimed 4 allowances on my W4. At this point, I want to submit a W4 to my employer where as little as possible or no tax is withheld. They adviced me that 10 allowances was the lowest, and that it would mean no taxes taken out. My salary is less than 50k, BTW. Does 10 allowances sound about right? Please post only if you know. Thx !!

Open Question: Before a job interview should I straighten my hair?
I have really curly hair that I wear in a layered bob. My roommate says straight hair is more professional-looking because it's "polished," so I should get a great blowout. I straighten my hair about twice a year, so I'd feel like I was making kind of a false first impression. But I really want this job. It's a desirable position, and there'll be a lot of competition, so I'd welcome any edge I could get. Do you think curly vs straight hair would really make a difference?
Open Question: Trustee dismissing Chapter 13 case?
After 5 years, my Chapter 13 case is paid in full this month 2/10. I just received a letter form the trustee stating my case was going to be dismissed in April because I did not submit my tax returns from 2005 - 2008. I have requested copies of my tax returns from the IRS and I am going to send them in. My attorney said to submit them ASAP to avoid dismissal. My questions are 1. What is going to happen if I have already paid off my plan? 2. Will I get my discharge papers if I provide this information?

Open Question: What is the best credit card for an 18 year old?
Ok before anyone jumps to conclusions about how I probably shouldn't have a credit card and that I am going to spend it on everything and anything, no. I don't plan on doing that. I have money on my debit card for that. I am looking into a credit card to start building credit with little things, like gas. And I was wondering if anyone can tell me a good credit card company I should go with? No rude responses please, not all 18 year olds are irresponsible. Both of my parents have had horrible credit and debt and I never want to end up like them.

Open Question: Careers in glassblowing?
I am planning on majoring in art, specifically glassblowing, next year when I attend college. I have found that it is truely my passion, it is amazing fun. I plan on getting a degree in art and arts management, so I can own my own business and sell not only my glass, but also my paintings, drawings, etc. When I'm older, I do not want to live where I live now, I want to live somewhere else in the US, possibly New Hampshire or California. Where would be the most popular place to sell glass and be the most suitable to make a living? And also, what other careers, besides teaching to blow glass and selling glass are under the category of glassblowing?
Open Question: Virtual Stock Exchange?
Ok this may sound like a stupid question, but my macroeconomics class is playing a game on virtualstockexchange.com (a site that reflects the true stock market) and I wanted to know, when I put in an order to sell it doesn't go through for about 20 min, and then the order is in pending mode for about another day or so. When I place the order to sell, will it sell at the price it was at when i placed the order, or will it sell at the price it's at when the order is finally complete after a day or so? Also, if anyone could give me good advice on companies to invest in whos stocks look hopeful that would be great too. Thanks!
Open Question: SBA is a ripoff. Why do we need the small business association?
I thought the SBA was supposed to support and help new and small businesses by filling the gap that regular commercial banks don't want to risk because they are backed by the government. Trying to start a business without perfect credit in the U.S is a joke. I won't get approved from the bank so I call the SBA and I'm told to go to my bank and ask them for a SBA guaranteed loan. Whuptie duh, my bank is going to look at my credit and because I don't have over a 700 and a large sum of money for down payment, I'm screwed. So what's all the bs about our president saying that they will be giving $30M to help support small businesses.

Open Question: I need some advice! Please help!?
I own a small business that transfers 35mm slides ( among other things). People send me their slides in the mail and I transfer them to dvd and send them back to them along with the dvd. So last week I had did this for someone and they sent me an email saying the box was opened! I asked the post office and they said it was delivered empty, and shipped full! This was a rather large account (the bill exceeded $500) and I just sent them out another dvd. NOW the post office is trying to find them but the person wont pay until they are found! how should I handle this? do I give them a discount? or do I say its not my problem and you still owe me $500? I really don't know what to do :(
Open Question: What is the best way to repair my credit and fast?
When I was younger I got 5 credit cards and didnt understand that I didnt actually have the money I was spending. I have paid off most of the cards except my sears account. I received a letter from a lawyer who works on their behalf and says I must pay right away. What can I do and what are my options? I made a big mistake and now Im really stuck with bad credit. Any advice....I have a secured creditcard to try and re-build credit but my sears is still in the way.....If I pay them off in payments will my credit start getting better withing a year or how does it work.....
Open Question: Anyone else's tax return still setting in Post Office in Kansas City MO?
Our tax return was mailed on Jan. 28 2010 via certified priority mail. It arrived in Kansas City MO on Feb. 3 2010. It still shows arrival at unit on the USPS website. I have checked the IRS website and no updates. It was mailed to The Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center, Kansas City MO, 64999 which is the correct address. I filed a complaint with the USPS and was told that it was exactly where it needed to be and the reason for no delivery update was that it was among many more and probably had not yet been acknowledged by the IRS (they hadn't got to it yet). I have encountered one other person who has the same issue. We both qualified for the homebuyer's credit and sent in proper documentation. I was wondering if anyone else was going through the same thing that we are? And if you are what information do you have regarding this? Thanks for your time.
Open Question: 2 weeks with no pay- wont get paid for another month-but need money?
Hello everybody, Here is my situation. After constantly looking for work for the past 6 month, i finally found a job in my trade. i started just over two weeks ago and got my hours in. I havent gotten any papers yet, to sign. I am right out of money and need to get paid. the boss says i wont get paid for another 4 weeks. i dont have gas to even get to work anymore. no food in the fridge and no money for rent, i asked for an advance at least, but he wont give me that either. I havent talked wages with him yet, but i am expecting 25$/h i do stucco as a trade. i heard i can put a lean on the building, and one worker said something about i need my own Gst number, but even with that, my boss wont pay me for another month. please tell me if there is a legal way for me to get my money, or what else i could do. thanks a lot, please excuse my broken English, (i immigrated to BC in 2004 from Germany) thanks Daniel
Open Question: Legal work start times and clocking in?
If you are scheduled to start work at a certain time, is it legal for them to have you sit around off the clock and wait till they need you? I just started my first job as wait staff at a restaurant. I was under the impression this was a part time job as it was advertised for lunch or dinner shifts. However when I got to work yesterday at noon I wasn't allowed to clock on for almost 45 minutes. Then I was sent on a 2 hour break from 3-5pm. Upon returning at 5 I was made to sit and wait again before clocking on. Then I learned all shifts were 11 hours (scheduled) but in all actuality you will only work/be paid for 6-7 hours. So my rostered hours are well over what would be considered full time but the actual hours on the clock would be considered part time. Talking to several others on staff... they all said this is the norm for this place. I'm just wondering if its legal. I should state I am in Australia and not sure how their labour laws here work. :(
Open Question: Help with partial unemployment filing questions in new jersey (please read my details!!)?
my boyfriend filed for partial unemployment. he received a letter in the mail telling him to call a number on the 17th. when he did, it was completely and totally automated, so all the questions he had at the time couldn't be answered by anyone. this is why i'm on yahoo answers asking for help because i can't find it anywhere else. These are my two inquiries: 1. If the prompt (over the phone) is asking for WEEKLY gross pay, and he gets paid BIWEEKLY, should he just split the biweekly amount in half to give to them as his weekly gross pay amount? even though the first week out of those two he may have worked more or less hours than the next week? does that even matter? 2. He also has child support garnished directly from his paycheck. Should the weekly gross pay he claims for partial unemployment include the child support? or should he claim the amount of gross pay after the child support is garnished? please help if you understand what i'm asking and truly know the answers, or at least have some useful advice. thank you.
Open Question: Is it wrong to only give a one day notice?
I had a job interview today and feel like I have a good chance of getting the job. The job would mean a LOT more money for me, benefits, and is somewhat related to the career path I'm pursuing in college (I'm also a college student). The job I have now pays me below my state's min wage (legal because it's a work at home job that is based in another state), cut my hours so I only have 10 a week, and is completely unrelated to what I want to do. I don't even list this job on my resume' and do not want a recommendation from them. My supervisor is however, the nicest person on the planet. If I get the job they want me to start right away and because I don't list my current job on my resume they don't know that I have it. Do you think it would be horribly wrong in this case (if I get the job) to leave with little notice (possibly only 1 day/same day)? I'm not a very important member of the team (I work customer service and company has well over 100 agents).
Open Question: Should I co-own a house with my Mom?
I recently graduated from college and I have been working for a couple years. I have been thinking of buying a home especially since it is a buyers market. I just don't want to get a mortgage based on the salary I have now being that I'm still at entry-level. My mom had mentioned to me that maybe we could buy a home together. My parents are divorced and my mom has not remarried since then (14 years). Me and my mom are very close and I am very confident in co-owning property with her. The house she lives in now is about to be paid off in about a year or so, and she wants to use the money from that to go towards the house we would buy. It sounds like a good idea since the thought of paying a mortgage all by myself scares me. My only reservation is how this would effect my personal life. I do hope to get married one day and I'm not sure how this would effect that. She said that if I do get married I could either keep the house and she would move out or I could buy another house with my husband and I move out. I'm not sure what to do. Anyone have opinions on this?
Open Question: Landlord suing for rent I was recievening foreclosue letter under her name at home?
So I was receiving Foreclosure letters at a place where I was renting ( not under my name the owners name) I received 4 letters in total I was there for one year. So i decided to leave cause I was stressed that the home went under and I was going to be kicked out ( I have two little ones to worry about). So I gave the owner my thirty day notice and I let her keep my deposit. I recieved 4 letter in a one year span that I was there renting. The first letter said she was 2000 behind the 2nd letter said she was 4000 behind the 3rd letter said she was 6000 behind and the final letter I received said she was 8000 behind. All the letters came from the lender and people were Wells fargo was leaving notes on the front door to call ASAP! I had asked her to show me a letter from the bank to show he was not loosing the home and that I would pay the balance. She NEVER gave me one and said to disregard the letter that the mortage payment was being applied wrong ( a compound acct). So she is taking me to Small Claims court to pay 800.00 from rent The balance left that the deposit did not cover. NOW my questions to you is what can I do to fight the claim against me? Do i have a case for me to fight back I have two of the four letters with me. She did give me permission to open her letters because she didn't know what it was and she is also a real state agent if that helps with an answer thanks .
Open Question: I purchased some furniture (In Texas)?
but I moved out of town (1hr away). I had informed the company of my new address and numbers.I made sure that it was okay that the furniture was taking with me. They had no problems. I started to find my furniture having defects (wood had detached itself from frame). Couches were uncomfortable .. You could actually feel the wood within. So I called them to tell them about the problems I was having and they had told me they would have someone contacting me about them to set up a time to have some one to inspect the furniture, But yet no one was sent out . So we called back to see what was the deal and that's when they told me that they were not going to send anyone out there until a payment was received. I told them I was not going to continue to make payments on this furniture if they are defected and I told them to come and pick up their furniture since they did not want to fix the problems. Now they have told me that they are not going to pick up the furniture and that we should have never brought them out of town in the first place ... They want for us to make the drive to return the furniture. They were shouting and being rude over the phone. So I sent them a certified letter asking them to pick their furniture up with all my information of where the furniture is located. Again they call after receiving the letter telling us that we are to bring in the furniture or they were going to report the property stolen... So what can I do ....? NOTE: I have only had these couches since Dec. 2009 when I first purchased them at my other home the couches were never used til we moved out of town and that is why we never knew of the defects of the furniture...
Open Question: How do mortgages work?
Not to be disrespectful, but I think my parents are the most financially inept and unwise people. Ok, my dad is a lawyer, he owns a firm, I think he earns about $250,000-$450,000 per annum. Our annual expenses, to be honest are a bit on the high side considering the fact that there are 5 of us kids and we all go to private schools except the baby of course. My problem is though for one my dad doesn't save.. At least that's what my mom told me, and second for the past 6 years( since I was about 10) we've been planning to move out of the house we are currently in and have been renting for the past 13 years! What bothers me the most though is that my parents refuse to get a loan or a mortgage from the bank. My case was that if we had taken a mortgage six years ago when property was much cheaper than it is now, with his income, we would have almost finished if not already finished paying it all off, or, if he had been saving a certain percentage of his income each year from the time he started working, we wouldn't be in this situation. The game plan now is to move by the end of this year, I guess my dad has a bit of dough in the bank now cause he's looking to buy before march. The dilemma is, we had always planned about getting a much bigger space for all of us to live comfortably but due to time wasting the bigger plots are more than he can afford right now, so my parents are considering buying a smaller plot, its like going back to square one. So once again I suggest a loan to buy the bigger plot which is about $370,000 and he has $200,000 to spend, but my mum doesn't even want to hear anything of it because she feels that if we take a loan, at the end of the day we'd end up paying more than double of what we borrowed, in interest. So I want to know how loans and mortgages actually work so I can try and explain to them why it'll be a good idea before they make any decisions that I'll regret. Thanks, sorry the question is so long, I'm just venting my frustration.
Open Question: Are these factors that could potentially get me out of my lease?
This is in Texas I moved into a 90 year old quadplex back on November 1st. When I moved in the house had been vacant for 6 months because it was forclosed and was just remodeled and leveled. In The beginning of December it was found that a sewage pipe had busted in the only vacant downstairs apt and urine and feces had been soaking in the wall causing mold, tons of flies and a dirty smell. Somehow the bugs are getting into my bathroom and these things fly at your mouth so unless I keep a window open they are always there. A week after this was found the property management quit and a new company stepped forward. This new place is all about talk and no action. In my contract it stated that I would have two A/C window units installed in my apartment immediately. This was written November 1st, 2009 and I tried weekly to get them with the first management company and when they quit I did the same with the new company. I've filled out work orders that are copied and stapled to my copy of my rent check to show that I've tried. As of February 22, 2010 I still don't have the window untis which clearly breaches the contract. It has been winter but I live in Texas, the weather changes on a daily basis and there has been about 10 days over the past 4 months that it's been hot enough to use the A/C. The foundation was not properly fixed either. When it got cold the house started moving again and huge cracks are everywhere. The house would not pass inspection, I heard it from the person who gave the last bid to fix it. All of this has been repeated over and over again and still no action, all take of promises to take care of it.Regardlesss in my contract it states that the A/C units should be there and 1/3 into my lease they're still not there. My old property manager told me that the reason she left is because the homeowner doesn't want to pay for anything and stretches one issue over 4 or 5 phone calls. Do I have a case here or what? I want to call and say that that I want this month prorated for the days I would have used my A/C, let me out of my contract at the end of this month or end of march, and pay for me to relocate because I signed a contract 4 months ago for something completely different than what I have. Thank you for your help
