I was wondering if there was a professional difference between registered nurse midwife and certified nurse midwife, cause there are branches of nursing where it makes a difference. (For example, CRNA= certified registered nurse anesthetist). If there is a difference, which one is the higher rank? Or do they stack like CRNA? Sorry for a confusing question!

There is no official category of midwives called "registered nurse midwives." That is not a term that any midwife uses. The appropriate term for licensed nurses is "registered nurse" or "RN," and the term for RNs who become nurse-midwives is "Certified Nurse Midwife" or "CNM". A CNM must first be an RN before she can apply to become a CNM.
Certified Professional Midwives (or CPMs) enter midwifery practice directly, without first having to train as a nurse. Some RNs, however, might choose to become CPMs rather than CNMs, but their certification and licensure as a midwife would not be based upon their prior training or status as an RN. They would be BOTH RNs and midwives, but would not combine the two titles.
