Open Question: Need some info on taxes.?

I work as a contract transcriptionist at home now and am listed as a statutory employee, meaning she takes out my social security and medicare taxes. I do not understand, however, why they do not have to figure and take out income tax out of our checks. It would be much easier on me not having to figure out how much to take out every check and put in savings to pay quarterly. Any comments?
