Open Question: Can only having clinical trial compensation qualify you for child tax credit?

I'm paying child support but my ex isn't employed and sometimes does clinical studies for money. Now is that true employment? I practically pay child support while he does nothing and earning child tax should be you have real income, not a clinical study.
